PSX Firmware Upgrade Coming Next Month

David Smith

Owners of the first-generation model of Sony's PSX multipurpose entertainment console will be able to download the features of the second-generation version next month, Sony announced today. The new interface and video recording features added to the DESR-5100 and DESR-7100 models of the combination game player and digital video recorder will be available for download once those models hit retail shelves July 15.

The new versions of the PSX, aside from coming in a snappy new silver finish, feature several upgrades over the latest version of the original PSX firmware. The selection includes a new DVD-authoring interface with 50 interactive menu templates, new music visualizer functions, and new options for recording video to DVD, including swapping recording quality modes between recording video and burning DVDs.

PSX owners without a broadband connection to download the firmware upgrade will also be able to order it on a CD-ROM from Sony free of charge.
